Short on interesting finds so I wrote more today.
Crusades Against Privacy - In what shouldn't surprise anyone, Jomes Comey really wants law enforcement to have access to the data on your phone. Tech Dirt has the details from his book where he made it his personal "crusade" to get access to encrypted devices. This is why it is vital that legislators begin to understand it is their job to protect citizens from the overreach of law enforcement. Unfortunately, that isn't the view most take, so eventually, Comey may get his way.
Blame The Internet - Steve Albini tried to warn bands in the 90’s that the labels were not their friends. Labels would leave bands in debt and not owning enough of their music to have anything to show for their efforts. The streaming companies made good villains, but it turns out as always the labels are the ones skimming off the top.
Ceding Authority - This is an excellent video essay on how attempts to appear authoritative have hurt the video essay as a format. Some of this comes from the fact that academic writing trains people to squash their personal voice in favor of a contrived voice from forced authority. Add this the fact that most people aren’t citing sources and you have a recipe for mistaking opinion for fact.
