Coinbase is Not a Bank - I'm not sure how the longterm viability of cryptocurrency is possible with companies like this. If there was ever something practically invites the Government to step in, this is probably it. I wouldn't be surprised if you see the EU start to get involved some time this year.
Go To The Effing Doctor - There isn't much viler than exploiting people with health problems. Worse yet when peddling bullshit that might actually kill people.
Gregor Samsa LLC - A fun McSweeney's take on Kafka.
Closed Source AI - Some very valid criticisms here about the state of AI research. Though some of this is the same reason that reproducibility has been a problem across disciplines, it's clear some of this is because the code isn't being shared. It's clear from the private investment that AI has legs, but the shroud of secrecy makes it hard to separate the genuine breakthroughs from attempts to fleece investors.
Attention Seeking Morons - Apparently it's a thing to say that you were attacked trying to watch the Black Panther movie. What is wrong with people?
It Begins - The first lawsuits related to Meltdown and Spectre are filed.
Not Kafka! - Would it shock you that Kafka, a writer so notoriously self-loathing that he wanted all of his work burned after he died, was kind of a shithead?
Ikea Guide To Crypto - Another gem via Boing Boing this comic breaks down public key crypto as Ikea assembly instructions. The archives are worth checking out too.
iOS vs. Android Comaprison - Lifehacker does a breakdown of how the current versions of iOS and Android compare.
Poorly Designed Weapons - Defense programs have produced some fantastic feats of technology design. The weapons detailed in this Modern Rouge round-up are still impressive, but moreso for just how poorly thought through they were.
Being an Asshole is not a Protected Class - Who knew that writing a manifesto that your coworkers are genetically inferior isn’t protected behavior at work? Oh, wait everyone but this dipshit.
Black Panther, Sun Ra, and the Black Panthers - An exploration of the Afrofuturism in Black Panther, its roots in Sun Ra's Saturnalian mythology and the Black Panther party. The Quietus does excellent cultural criticism, weaving the origins of the character into the past, and hinting at what the film might be saying about the present.
Classic Menus - Atlas Obscura has menus ranging from the novel to historical. I particularly like the Australian menu with four courses of beer. That's my kind of dinner party.
Twitter Kills Their Mac App - Twitter kills their Mac app. While everyone else rants that the sky is falling on native Mac apps, I just see Twitter trying to slim down their efforts to cut costs. Time to switch to Twitterrific.
