A bit heavy on debunking today
Traditional Fake News - Proliferation of our and out fake news is rare, more often it plays out like this story from Motherboard. Something is taken out of context, most often because someone wants to advance an agenda. Hand-wringing over Russian bots misses the fact they exploit our own tendency to believe before we verify. I think the best knowledge is why are explainers like this coming from small tech sites, and not being done by the mainstream press? Most likely it’s because they depend on the outrage cycle as much as the trolls.
Another Dispelled Myth - In another example of bad media combined with generational bias, it turns out that Millennials might not be the phone junkies, it's the over 35 set stuck on their phones all day. Despite terrible managers everywhere's assertions, perception isn't reality.
Bogus Genes - It turns out that almost half of the genetic testing done by mail is inaccurate. Technology Review has the story but doesn’t specify if it was just the medical tests, or even the ancestral testing was wrong as well.
Community And Convenience - Converting so much of the suburbs and cities to private spaces that want you to move along as quickly as possible hasn’t done much for the community. As online shopping has made physical convenience less profitable, now many of those same spaces need to cultivate a sense of community to survive.
Fashion, Turn To The Left - The NYT covers the opening of a Bowie Exhibit with some cool interactive photos and interviews with Niles Rodgers, Beth Ditto, and Trent Reznor.
Nerd Fight - Jeremy Parish rounds up the best JRPG series for Kotaku. I don't really quibble with any of these, though I'm sure everyone would slide these around different places depending on your age and platforms of choice.
