This Is Why We Write
It was back on the old Typed version of this blog that I last wrote about why I liked to write. It was shortly after Macgasm had folded, but before I wrote for Make Use Of. The seven months I have been without a professional home for my writing. My posts here have varied in their frequency, and there’s still a scant single digit number of you that show up here with any regularity.
Part of the problem is that I never leaned hard into freelancing for my “real” job, so it always had to take a back seat to a day job. I was able to juggle two jobs for longer than I should have. Writing tutorials, reviews, and tech news was never not fun. I am genuinely interested in technology, though I would admit the most fun I had writing was at Dignews. Movie reviews and game reviews came naturally to me which is why they fill quite a few of the non link posts here.
The link posts have really slowed down since I got a new job. I haven’t gotten a rhythm down to keep up on stories throughout the day. I have spent a fair amount of time skipping reading the news. I have been trying to keep reading more books. I am not disengaged or anything, and the things I find actually interesting to earmark end up on here. It’s just often that is at times that people aren’t really scouring for stuff to read. It’s not a complaint, just the way that my natural writing cycle is working now.
I think that I am going to start writing more about music again. Inspired by Twitter rants that I harass the poor guys at I Die You Die with, I obviously am engaging with music with a critical ear. I’ve shied away from trying to chase it down professionally, but that’s a mix of not having the vocabulary built up for it and not wanting to rant about music I don’t like. So much like the rest of the media reviews I do on here, it’s things I actually took some time to engage with. I try to adhere to Madmup’s rules about wasting your time on bad reviews. (He let me play around with a bunch of experiments on his site.)
Mostly I just want to find stuff to write about that feels like something creative. I want to start getting back into fiction, Nanowrimo might be a good grind to get back on the horse. I’ll hold myself to posting progress reports here, as well as stack up some full on posts to schedule out.
I really like this post from Austin Kleon that talks about his blog as the fridge he puts stuff up on. I hope to keep this place going as a sort of public notebook, and document that things that I find interesting. If for no other reason than to keep making the clackity noise.
Rants and Reviews. Mostly just BS and Affiliate Links.
