The Egg Racket
The price of Eggs was already a story about an industry made vulnerable by unsafe practices, but as Cory Doctorow shares, it's not even the avian flu outbreak. Instead, it's an industry with a few competitors colluding cartel style to control price.
The economy is facing a confluence of unregulated market consolidation over the last two decades, along with vulnerable supply chains meeting problems people have been warning about for years. Overcrowding in chicken farms is fairly notorious, with a paper dating back to 2014 explaining how the abhorrent conditions actually make birds more prone to sickness.
Like so many difficulties, there's no way that any of these get addressed properly. The partisan media simply shoves this aside or uses it as a cudgel, depending on the alignment.
