Flipping The Calendar
What we make of a year doesn't come rolling in on January 1st. It is a series of moments that culminate into a complete chapter. We like these changeovers because they arrange our lives into neatly packaged bits of narrative. The world is digested and made sense of.
It does make sense to at least acknowledge that the odometer has rolled over another time. I am not interested in making resolutions, but I do want to talk about this place and trying to ensure that I keep the content coming. I finished a novel last year during NaNoWriMo, but that did make the posting here fall off. I didn't do much in December. So I want to make sure that I am at least posting here once a week.
I'm also interested in keeping up with fiction. Rejiggering my style and writing stories again is taking considerable effort. It will be some time before they see the light of day, if at all.
At some point, I'd like to be published by someone other than myself. I'll be pitching around a bit this year, and you'll see links here if anything comes of it. I also want to expand what I do here. When I was still writing for other sites, this was primarily a media diary. (Though most of that content went away when Typed closed down.) While I am working on more essays, I would like to hear what you'd want to read more of as well.
Mainly, I wanted to write this entry to talk about the reason we make stuff. So much of the culture is a din of shitting on people and things. This isn't an indictment of criticism, just the lazy snark that passes for most of our discourse. Make more stuff, worry less about snarky piranhas posting other people's thoughts to social media. Make new things, be excited, and support when your friends do it.
The culture may be a disaster, but we can make more culture for ourselves. We should build better communities to support each other to make things and get away from bullshit culture.
